John Murray borrowed volumes 1–3 of an unspecified edition; Dorothee Chareau borrowed volumes 4–6 from the Bell edition, edited by Henry B. Wheatley; Maximilien Vox borrowed the single-volume Globe edition, edited by G. Gregory Smith; Hélène de Wendel borrowed the single-volume Globe edition and volumes 2–3 of the Bell edition; Guillaume Lerolle borrowed volumes 1–2 of the Bell edition; and Monique de Vigan borrowed the Newnes edition, edited by Lord Braybrooke.
