Edith V. Cowles was an artist. She later became a nun, adopting the name Madre Francesca Chiara. In the 1930s, she worked as an English teacher at Il Regio Istituto delle Signore Montalve alla Quiete in Florence, where one of her pupils was Mary de Rachewiltz (1924 – 2026), the daughter of Ezra Pound.
