- Notes
- Max Allen Egloff was a journalist and civil servant, and was married the economist Marjorie Ruth Clark. In a letter to his mother on May 26, 1923, he writes: "Really my pleasures and annoyances are now reduced to those incident to routine existence in Paris. Once in awhile comes an unusual pleasure such as meeting Hemingway, a young American writer of moderate distinction. I was introduced to him yesterday by Noyes who met him at the Shakespeare bookstore, a hangout for English and American writers. [...] The Shakespeare library which I mentioned is proving a great help, Slyia Beach [sic], the proprietress, maintains a large lending library containing most of the books in which I am particularly interested at this time."
