- From the Willa Cather Archive: "Born in Red Cloud, NE, Josephine Gund was the eldest child of Margaret Miner Gund and Charles Frederick Gund; she grew up in Blue Hill, NE. In 1923 she graduated from the University of Nebraska, where she subsequently taught Latin, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. In 1925–26 she went to France to study at the Sorbonne. Around 1928 she moved to New York City; beginning as a private secretary she rose to become a director of the Guggenheim Foundation in 1941. In 1931 she married George R. Leighton of New York City; they had one son."
