- Likely the British artist Mabel Harrison (1869 – 1949). A notebook in the Sylvia Beach papers reads: "Mrs. Mabel Harrison / 49 bd du Montparnasse / amie de Raymonde Linossier / son mari detruisit en partie MS Circe." Noel Riley Fitch offers a fuller account of the episode: "The first of many crises involved the typing of Ulysses, which was a precarious effort. Several typists refused to type the Circe episode, the bawdiest in the book. [...] When Raymonde's father fell ill, she had to stop typing, but found a friend to take her place: Mrs. Harrison, who was the wife of an employee of the British embassy. One evening he picked up the manuscript from the table where she had left it and began reading. Angered at what he read, he tore some of the pages and threw them in the fire."
